The damage is done

We were recently treated to wall to wall coverage of sledge hammer wielding ISIS men smashing up ancient statues in the Mosul Museum. The act looked, and was described by western media as, barbaric.

Job done, the Bogeymen are not only coming to get you but your statues too!

But some more discerning news outlets did follow up with a few questions and observations, not least, that anyone who has ever worked with plaster wouldn't have missed that many of the statues falling were doing so with ease of powdery plaster.

No surprise then, when days later Fawzye al-Mahdi, who heads the antiquities authorities, based at National Museumof Iraq in Baghdad said, "None of the artefacts destroyed in the video is an original." They were plaster copies of the originals either held in Baghdad or made from statues that were earlier looted/stolen/saved and now grace prized collections in London, Berlin, Paris, New York etc.

Fawzye al-Mahdi goes on to mention the Illicit trade in cultural artefacts, initially a less visually disturbing matter than men with sledge hammers but significant nonetheless:

ISIS enhances its sources by selling archaeological artifacts stolen from Iraq and Syria to the west

“ISIS” organisation are selling artifacts stolen from Iraq and Syria to the west......the artifact collectors usually use a broker to buy these stolen artifacts, but today they are in direct contact with the Islamic state organisation, pointing out that the organisation uses a network of relationships to reach customers directly ......ISIS elements use bulldozers in order to get gypsum and wall paintings from old churches, which brings them a lot of money.
It is noteworthy that the Iraqi Intelligence Service confirmed earlier this year that ISIS was able to collect 23 million pounds from the sale of artifacts from the Syrian city of Nabaq, which is full with Christian Collectibles.

So the Media chirp on about the threat to civilisation, illustrated by moronic film footage which stays deeply implanted in our heads while a highly sophisticated system of international Art robbery carries on more or less undetected under our noses.

It seems ISIS with the help of WESTERN MEDIA are helping to see through a old prophecy attributed to Karl Rove

"That's not the way the world really works anymore." He continued "We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors … and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do."
