Daily Pickings often makes reference to "exponential growth" when talking about debt or the economy. GDP growth is usually referred to in percentage terms. But do we understand the concept of exponential growth and its consequences? If policy makers really understood, we'd be doing things differently.
This series of videos (8 at c.10 mins each) of Dr. Albert A. Bartlett's lecture on "Arithmetic, Population, and Energy" explains the stark realities of exponential growth. Part One (introduction) is important but Part Three reveals why we only perceive real danger of excessive growth when it's too late to do anything about it.
The series is billed "the most important video you'll ever see."
