Occupy London Tours - December 2013 programme

Forget Jack the Ripper and the London Dungeons, we show you the murky side of the capital’s more recent past.

Occupy London Tours is a free alternative tour company, run by (very well informed!) volunteers, who want to throw open the secretive world of finance and politics for all to see.

We run regular, free tours:

The Canary Wharf Tour

12th December, evening (book for time). Approx. 1.5 hours. Meet Canary Wharf tube, main exit (Banker’s Plaza).

Most people have never been to this revamped dockland in East London, yet the home of the financial services industry touches our lives everyday. In this tour we narrate the financial crisis of 2007/8 as we visit the banks, ratings agencies, accountancy firms and regulators clustered around Canada Square and discuss what – if anything – has changed since. You’ll visit the last resting place of the infamous Lehman Bros, make your very own ‘credit default swap’ and find out how to create money out of thin air…

The City of London Tour

7th December, afternoon (book for time). Approx. 2 hours. Meet at St Paul’s Cathedral steps. Ends opposite Liverpool St Station.

We tell the story of the UK’s smallest city (really!), the history of money in the heart of London and the Square mile’s role in the financial crisis of 2007/8. Find out just what the Corporation of London actually is, why the Queen has to ask permission to enter the City and why the ‘Black-Scholes equation’ matters to you!

Xmas Special: ‘The UK Gold’ Screening, Mince Pies & Drinks

9th December, 6:30pm. Until close. At the City of London Distillery, 24 Bride Lane

London EC4Y 8DT.

The Worshipful Company of Occupy Tours would like you to join us for an evening of film, drink, and subversive socialising to launch the festive period in style.

We'll kick off at 6:30pm with mince pies and a screening of The UK Gold,  a brand new film about the biggest tax haven in the world: The City of London (“A story seismic enough to shift perceptions of finance and flag forever”), before grabbing a tipple in the City of London's only working gin distillery - the first in 200 years!

The evening is completely FREE and open to all. (Though you'll have to pay for your own drinks - sorry!).

Booking essential: http://occupytours.org/book-a-place/

The tours are designed to be informative, entertaining and - most importantly - accessible. Our aim to is to enable people from London, the UK and all over the world to engage with the financial system and its impact on their lives.

We de-mystify this secretive and badly understood world through colourful stories, secret histories, rock-solid facts and figures, pavement art, games - and even our very own collateralised-debt-obligation rap (!).

The tours offer a critique of the status quo without being politically affiliated.

Attendees often join us in the pub afterwards to carry on the conversation.

What they say about us:

The Power of Economics

On 1st November 2013, Critical Thinking's ideas for a New Economy are being presented to the Coalition for Economic Justice at The School of Economic Science, 11 Mandeville Place, London W1U 3AJ from 18:45 to 20:30. All are welcome.

"Somewhere in our history we took a wrong turn and today we are reaping the consequences.  If we do not step back to evaluate the root causes of the rolling economic crises, our civilisation is in danger of collapse."

We are the 99%

In 2012, Alexandra Stein ran a course at the Free University and wrote an interesting perspective on Occupy in June of that year.

At 8pm, on 9 November 2013, Alex will be giving a talk at The Nowhere Club, The Epicentre, Leytonstone, E11 4LJ.

Seven Seconds

Random Order Theatre Company presents Seven Seconds by Retep Yehtaen, a dramatised multimedia production supported by Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth. At the Etcetera Theatre, 265 Camden High Street, London NW1 7BU (above the Oxford Arms) . October 1-6 and 8-13, 7:15pm, 6:45pm Sundays. Tickets £12 or £10 concessions. Box Office 020 7482 4857.

The play takes the form of a sort of reverse press conference. A range of well known journalists including George Monbiot and David Aaronavitch are played by (some would say) more open minded truth seekers from the world outside the corporate media. Real articles that they have written are thrown back at them with video evidence as a part of the multimedia play. Emphasis is laid on the still unexplained collapse of WTC Building 7, not hit by a plane and seven hours after the main attack on New York. The total collapse levelled the 47 story skyscraper, full of highly sensitive government agencies, in just seven seconds, hence the title Seven Seconds.

Do you believe the "Official Conspiracy Theory" of 9/11???

If you do there are 2000 Architects and Engineers and tens of thousands of Academic Professionals who disagree with you.

If you think the 81 massive steel columns of WTC 7 were sliced through with box cutters, prepare to be enlightened.

If you think aliens did it, go watch Star Trek.

If you think the planes were Holograms, go to a toy shop. If you are Anti Semitic, stay home.

If you prefer Science to speculation and appreciate the odd joke, see you in October.
